Yevgeny Rachyov exhibition in Moscow

If you’ve followed me for more than a month you will recognize the style of Yevgeny Rachyov’s illustration. I know I post him a lot, but I do love his works. There’s an exhibition going in Moscow right now that has numerous of his original works–illustration as well as wooden sculpture (those have not been exhibited at all since the 1960s). All of those come from the artist’s family archive.

The exhibition is only open until November 20, so if you’re in Moscow I encourage you to go (and send me pictures and reports). I wish I could go!!! :(

Exhibition “Animals of Yevgeny Rachyov”
Location: Otkryty Klub Gallery, Spiridonovka 9/2, Moscow
Open 4 pm to 10 pm daily except Wednesday

“Music on the Bone” (музыка на костях) was one of the many ways the man fought the system. While a lot of music (especially Western music) was banned in the Soviet Union, bootleggers made illegal records using x-ray film.

These pictures are from the exhibition I visited in St Petersburg. I loved the recreated bootlegger’s room!

Another of my favourite themes on postcards - school and pioneers. I dig the image of the perfect youngster shown on postcards. Utopia with a 50s feel. Also those sepia postcards from the 30s - very interesting specimen from the transitional time from Russian Empire to Soviet Russia. Their haircuts still look like roaring 20s.

By the way, feel free to contact me if you’re interested in any of these postcards for your collection. I’ll explore and come back with a quote.

Reporting from the children’s postcard exhibition in Moscow! These are simple phone shots, but you can get the idea. There are all sorts of postcards there; holidays, illustration, fairy tales, educational etc. About half of the exhibition are Russian Empire postcards (pre-Soviet Union). I don’t know much about them, but I was impressed at the number and diversity.

For Soviet postcards, I was mostly “Oh I have this one”, but also there were a number of rare postcards which I only yet hope to find for my collection.

If you’re in Moscow this summer do not miss the biggest old postcard exhibition at the Central House of Artists (Tretyakov Gallery house on Krymsky Val).
11,000 Russian and Soviet postcards! I’m certainly going.
