What exactly is Cheburashka? Is it like a baby bear or some weird little critter? Also, what is his cultural significance? Is he sort of like a Soviet Mickey Mouse?
Cheburashka is a characher from a children’s book “Gena the Crocodile and His Friends” by Eduard Uspensky, and later stop motion cartoon. He’s described rather vaguely in the book as a small brown animal with large eyes that’s not a bear nor a puppy. He came from a tropical forest in a box of oranges.
It’s one of the most popular children’s books and cartoons in Russia ever, and now the character is also marketed as a sort of symbol of Russia. Lots of toys and souvenirs of all kinds.
He’s just so cute!

These guys sold instantly, but I want to share. I got them in a vintage shop in Kislovodsk during my recent vacation (because of course I will check all local vintage spots while I’m on vacation). They were made at a small workshop in Kislovodsk in 1980s. Although they don’t have hands, they’re cute as buttons!

June 1 is the Child Protection Day in Russia, so the orchestra played many cartoon songs in the park!
Little known fact, Gena the Crocodile had a night shift workmate called Valera the Crocodile. He is mentioned in the book.
